How to get the most out of your Howard Homecoming experience

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Howard Homecoming is one of the most magical experiences known to man.

Ok, ok, so I’m a wee bit biased when it comes to this one.

I haven’t missed a Howard Homecoming since I graduated in 2013. Even with jobs in Harrisonburg, Va. and Louisville, I always found my way back to the Mecca (as alums like to call it). I have so many great memories, it’s hard to sum it up in just one blog post.

At my age, Howard Homecoming is like one big family reunion. You see people that you haven’t seen all year or in a few years and a bunch of new faces that start to feel like family.

But you don’t have to be an alum to experience the magic. If you’re a newbie, here’s my quick guide on how to get the most out of your Howard Homecoming weekend.

  • Tip #1: Plan your schedule early

Laugh all you want, but I already have a list of events that I plan on attending.

Party promoters have already released tickets for the hottest events you’ll want to attend. Just do a quick search on Eventbrite and pick an event that suits your personality or check in with an alum.

This year, Howard Homecoming weekend is scheduled for 10/26 – 10/28. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

There are also events leading up to the weekend, like the fashion show and the step show, which are organized by students. Details on those events have not been released. I’ll be sure to update you, when they become available.

The student organizers like to keep those details under wraps, to keep alums on their toes. Soon, they’ll announce all the celebrities that will be attending Yardfest and other events they’ve scheduled.

I’m still wondering when Drake will return to the Yard.

  • Tip #2: Add the Yardfest and the tailgate to your schedule

They are are both FREE and they are both great networking opportunities. I’ve never seen a single frown on the Yard or in the tailgate parking lot.

For background, Yardfest is a concert where there will be several performances (lineup will include celebs and rising stars). Yardfest is typically scheduled on Friday.

The tailgate is scheduled for Saturday October 27, 2018.

  • Tip #3: Pace yourself

With so much to do, with so little time, you can easily get overwhelmed. Try not to overdo it at each event. Leave a little energy for the nightlife.

  • Tip #4: If you’re visiting from another state, find a hotel or Airbnb in D.C.

It will make things easier for you, if you plan on attending several events on the same day — especially if you plan on changing into a new outfit for the nightlife.

  • Tip #5:  Live in the moment

It’s easy to forget that Howard Homecoming is a unique event. Of course I want you to stunt for the gram, but I also want you to say hello to the friendly faces all around you. Try to remember their names (you never know when you’ll see them again) and take the time to admire the excellence that they all exude.

Go Bison!
